Cheese: Slices of Swiss Culture is launched

On Saturday night, 200+ people helped to give my latest book, Cheese: Slices of Swiss Culture a mighty push down the gangway of the Bider & Tanner bookshop in central Basel. Corks popped, cheese was sampled in prodigious quantities, the books were flying off my table and if I didn’t get writer’s cramp, I certainly ran out of inspired dedications to write in the front of the book. If you were one of the crowd, THANKS FOR COMING!

We were joined by two of the cheese makers featured in the book: Willi Schmid from Lichtensteig and Ewald Schafer from Cressier. Each brought a selection of their superb cheeses, the air was perfumed with aromas of Bergfichte (go to page 149 of the book), Bergmatter (page 123), Jersey Blue (page 187) and Mont Vully (page 119). There was a happy, excited buzz of guests as they caught up with friends, and met the cheeses – and their makers. My thanks to Jens and Franziska at Bider & Tanner and to Dianne Dicks and Monica Vischer of Bergli Books who all helped to make it such a brilliant evening.

The book is now well and truly out, in bookshops throughout Switzerland or direct from publishers Bergli Books. Send them a mail on and they’ll do the rest.

Next Saturday, 12 November, I’ll be signing copies from 11 till 3 at The [Orell Füssli] Bookshop on Zurich’s glittering Bahnhofstrasse – don’t blow the Christmas budget on the jools, keep some back to buy a book (or three) – hope to see you there!
